Celebrate World Food Day with Friends of WFP

October 16 is World Food Day, an opportunity to increase awareness, understanding and action to alleviate hunger. WFP supporters around the country are gearing up to raise awareness about global hunger in their own communities. Here are just a few of the events and activities being held  to mark World Food Day.

Feel International Global Hunger Today (FIGHT)
October 16, 2009
Houston, Tex.

Students in Houston are encouraged to skip lunch and donate the money they would have spent buying a meal to Friends of WFP. The FIGHT campaign, which was organized by a group of high school students in Houston, is distributing information and holding classroom presentations. It aims to engage 400 schools.

Pepsi Fundraiser
October 15-16, 2009

Pepsi will host information centers about WFP and World Food Day outside of its headquarters’ cafeterias. A Friends of WFP representative will be available to answer questions. Employees will have the opportunity to taste a typical WFP ration of rice and beans, and a chance to enter a raffle with a FEED bag prize package.

Bloomberg  Fundraiser
October 16, 2009
New York, N.Y.

Bloomberg L.P. will close the cafeteria at its New York headquarters, offering only coffee, tea and water. Funds that would have gone towards operating the cafeteria that day will instead be donated to Friends of WFP.

Kraft’s Delicious Difference Week
October 16, 2009

Kraft will ask its employees to raise awareness and funds for WFP as part of its Delicious Difference Week, which promotes local volunteer activities for employees. A Friends of WFP representative will speak during Kraft CEO’s “town hall” meeting, which will be held for employees at Kraft headquarters and be broadcast around the United States and Canada.

Unilever Fundraiser
October 16, 2009

WFP Committee volunteers will share information and collect donations for Friends of WFP outside of the Unilever headquarters’ cafeteria. Employees will have the opportunity to taste a typical WFP ration of rice and beans, and Friends of WFP President and CEO Karen Sendelback will speak.
