Help Celebrate World Food Day

World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16th to recognize the founding of The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945.  The World Food Program (WFP) and FAO, both based in Rome, Italy closely complement each other in the aim to eradicate global hunger. World Food Day strengthens international and national solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and draws attention to achievements in food and agricultural development.

Supporters of the World Food Program are stepping up again this year to raise awareness about global hunger and WFP. People like you are integral to building awareness of and support for WFP by sharing information and a passion for the cause in your community. The engagement of communities across our nation is fundamental to WFP’s success around the globe. We hope that you will use the tools and resources available here to get involved in World Food Day this October 16th. Thank you for joining us and helping the World Food Program make a difference in the lives of millions of people each year.

Fatuma Omar: From Squalor to Scholar

Fatuma could have married at fifteen. She could have been among the many Somali girls who never have a secondary education. She could have stayed in the refugee camp where she grew up, helping her mother collect water and firewood.

But Fatuma is no ordinary Somali girl. Despite her humble roots and despite coming from a culture where opportunities for young girls are few and far between, she is now attending Kenya Girls High School in Nairobi. Watch her video below and read her story.
