Purchase for Progress: Supporting Small Farmers Worldwide
Presented February 25, 2010
Guest Speaker: Ken Davies, Coordinator for P4P Initiative, World Food Program
Moderator: Margot Hoerrner, VP of Outreach, Friends of WFP
For several years, WFP has practiced a policy whereby they support local farmers by purchasing local food in the countries of operation. This is called “local procurement.” In 2008. WFP addressed the hunger needs of 102 million people in 73 developing countries, using $1.1 billion worth of local food. The Purchase for Progress program (P4P) builds on local procurement and takes it a step further. It enables smallholder and low-income farmers to supply food to WFP’s global operations and to gain more by doing so. P4P provides farmers with the know-how and tools to be competitive players in the agricultural marketplace. It will also put more cash directly into their pockets in return for their crops. Listen to this podcast to learn more about the P4P initiative.
