To Members of Congress:
More than 110 million school-aged children in the world's poorest countries suffer from chronic hunger. The vast majority of them do not attend school. This is an unnecessary and preventable tragedy.
The George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program provides meals in schools to some of these children. The McGovern-Dole Program has proven to be one of the most effective tools in fighting hunger and promoting education. Studies show that where school feeding programs are offered, enrollment and attendance rates increase significantly, particularly for girls.
However, the McGovern-Dole Program will feed only 3 million children in 2006. But the capacity exists to do more.
Bipartisan legislation was recently introduced in Congress to expand the McGovern-Dole Program so that more children can attend school and be guaranteed at least one nutritious meal per day.
I urge you to join me in supporting legislation to expand the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.
