The George McGovern Leadership Award: Uniting to End Hunger

The George McGovern Leadership Award: Uniting to End HungerGeorge McGovern

Friends of the World Food Program (Friends of WFP) held its 8th annual awards ceremony and reception this year on October 6 in the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill.  This year, in recognition of Sen. George McGovern’s leadership on hunger, our award ceremony was renamed. The George McGovern Leadership Award: Uniting to End Hunger was presented to Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.).

As chairwoman of the Agricultural Appropriations Subcommittee, Congresswoman DeLauro has been a longstanding leader in marshaling resources for U.S. international food assistance programs, including the George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.  She has played a significant role in building support among Members of Congress for efforts to address hunger.

In addition to Congresswoman DeLauro, Friends of WFP also presented the inaugural Friends of the World Food Program Global Citizenship Award to the WFP Committee of San Francisco for their commitment to ending global hunger and poverty. The WFP Committee program brings together groups of passionate, dedicated volunteers, working to organize local fundraising, awareness and advocacy activities to end global hunger and support the lifesaving work of WFP.  This was the first year a WFP Committee was acknowledged alongside our George McGovern Leadership Award recipient.

Friends of WFP recognizes leaders for their efforts and hard work to help end hunger and poverty.  In the past, Friends of WFP has honored such leaders as Reps. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) and Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), as well as professional athlete Paul Tergat.

Attendees at the event have included Members of Congress, congressional staff, administration officials, representatives of hunger relief organizations, ambassadors, WFP Committee program volunteers and the media.
