OVERALL POSITION DESCRIPTION
Friends of the World Food Program (Friends of WFP) is seeking a full-time Director of Public Affairs. This individual will be responsible for managing and supporting the organization’s media relations, publications and online activities.
The Director of Public Affairs will work with a small, dynamic staff to integrate communication efforts among fundraising, advocacy and volunteer engagement initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise and nurture the work of the Online Communications Manager and Communications Assistant
- Build and maintain productive relationships with media contacts
- Write press materials, including press releases, media advisories, pitch letters, op-eds and letters to the editor
- Respond to press inquiries, pitch stories to reporters and obtain op-ed placements
- Monitor media coverage
- Organize press events
- Write and edit online content of monthly newsletter, website and blog
- Write and edit fact sheets, bulletins, brochures and various other publications
- Review design of publications and materials for adherence to style guide
- Serve as advisor to communications staff on how best to leverage volunteer efforts
- Support Vice President of Communications on development of messaging and positioning, internal and external communication, speechwriting, campaign implementation, and production of annual report
- Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree and possess at least five years of experience in communications within the non-profit sector, with a proven track record of media placements and excellent writing and editing skills. Attention to detail, ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously, and desire to work in a collaborative and dynamic environment are a must. Previous management experience highly desirable.

Online Communications Manager

OVERALL POSITION DESCRIPTION
Friends of the World Food Program (Friends of WFP) is seeking a full-time Online Communications Manager. This individual will be responsible for managing and supporting the organization’s online strategies in the U.S. market and ensuring brand and messaging alignment with global campaigns as appropriate.
The Online Communications Manager will work with a small, dynamic staff to integrate communication efforts among fundraising, advocacy and volunteer engagement initiatives. This position will also leverage new and existing technology ideas to spread the organization’s mission across multiple online channels. The ideal candidate will keep abreast of the latest online trends and explore ways to use these trends creatively.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Writing:
- Maintain and update content on organization’s website
- Write blog entries and coordinate postings among staff
- Manage the production of monthly e-newsletter from an editorial and technical perspective
- Write and edit compelling email action alerts and appeals
- Online Campaigns (Fundraising, Advocacy and Volunteer Engagement):
- Develop and implement online campaigns which include web, social media, email marketing and multimedia components
- Track, analyze and report campaign results
- Develop and adapt content for social media to further the fundraising, advocacy and volunteer engagement goals of the organization
- Cultivate relationships with bloggers
- Strengthen and expand online fundraising, advocacy and volunteer engagement efforts
- Analyze the effectiveness of current web fundraising through analytics and historical giving data
- Coordinate scheduling and messaging of email campaigns
- Develop creative strategies to build and expand constituent base
- Constituent Relationship Management:
- Knowledge of CRM systems (preferably Convio Common Ground)
- Ability to run queries and manage email lists
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree and possess 3-5 years experience in online communications. Technical competency, knowledge of online marketing techniques, and experience with social media are highly desired. The ideal applicant will have strong writing and editing skills, with a proven track record of producing compelling content. Attention to detail, ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously, and desire to work in a collaborative and dynamic environment are a must.
