A quick scan of recent headlines reveals high food and fuel prices remain and are exacerbated by the current economic crisis. These trends are especially devastating for the nearly one billion chronically hungry people – who were already struggling for basic survival beforehand – and the international humanitarian organizations that provide assistance to the most vulnerable.

As hunger and its causes continue to grow more complex, the U.S. government needs a more effective response to meet these demands. A group of top humanitarian aid agencies launched the Roadmap to End Global Hunger, which sets forth a comprehensive and strategic plan that addresses world hunger in the short, intermediate and long term. This approach seeks to increase funding for key interventions needed to alleviate global hunger and ensure better coordination among existing U.S. government programs.

The Roadmap to End Global Hunger also calls for the Obama administration to create a White House Office on Global Hunger and restore the Congressional Select Committee on Hunger in the House and establish a Select Committee on Hunger in the Senate.

Legislation has now been introduced in Congress by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) that incorporates key recommendations of this initiative. I urge all Americans to ask their Members of Congress to support H.R. 2817, the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009.
