Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor The Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009. The bi-partisan bill, H.R. 2817, was introduced in the House in June by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.) and a version will be forthcoming in the Senate.  The legislation will ensure the U.S. leads the global community in tackling the pervasive problem of global hunger.

Based on the Roadmap to End Global Hunger, a report released in February of 2009 by a broad-based coalition of non-governmental organizations, advocacy groups and religious organizations spearheaded by Friends of the World Food Program, the legislation will provide a comprehensive U.S. plan to address global hunger and will improve coordination of U.S. hunger alleviation efforts. The first Millennium Development Goal commits the U.S. and other nations to eradicate extreme global hunger and poverty by the year 2015. The U.S., however, has no comprehensive strategy that sets specific targets, benchmarks and funding levels to ensure that it leads the global community in ending world hunger.

In 2008, we witnessed the devastating impact of global hunger. We saw the price of food skyrocket around the world, leading to food protests, riots and instability in more than 30 countries as an additional 115 million people were pushed deeper into poverty. Now the global financial crisis is intensifying hunger and hitting the world’s poorest people the hardest.

The Roadmap and the Roadmap Act offer a comprehensive plan to address global hunger. As a constituent, I support the Roadmap Act and the recommendations made in the Roadmap report and hope that you lead in Congress by co-sponsoring H.R. 2817, or the forthcoming Senate version of the bill.

Please ensure the U.S. leads the international community in the effort to achieve global food security by supporting a comprehensive U.S. strategy to address global hunger.
