Dole, McGovern named winners of World Food Prize
Former U.S. Senators and
presidential candidates Bob Dole and George McGovern are the winners of the
2008 World Food Prize.
Dole and McGovern will share
a $250,000 cash prize and will be formally honored at a ceremony in Des Moines
in October. They are being honored for the George McGovern-Robert Dole
International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.
The program, which was
established in 2000, has provided meals to more than 22 million children in 41
countries.
Dr. Norman Borlaug, who won
the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in spurring a so-called "Green
Revolution," created The World Food Prize to honor people who made
improvements in food quantity and availability. The prize, sometimes known as
the Nobel Prize of food, was first given in 1986.
